Assignment: Innovate and create luggage for the Kenneth Cole brand
Role: Group Research with assigned Individual Product Development
Tools Used: Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Wacom Intuos
As part of a Advanced Product Design course, the class worked with Heritage Travelware to develop luggage designs for the Kenneth Cole brand. The first portion involved group research assignments; primarily interviews, observation and documentation of the luggage utilization process as well as market evaluation. Brainstorming was then conducted to isolate potential product opportunities. Eventually individuals were assigned to independently develop a particular concept. The objective for my concept was to effectively integrate a secondary bag (messenger-style, in this case) to a primary item of luggage. I targeted short-term business travelers and their need to carry both work materials (laptop, files, notes) along with personal items (clothing, toiletries) in a compact but durable vehicle.
As a part of this course we had the opportunity to travel to New York to visit and meet with the Kenneth Cole design studio and team. Our work was for the licensee, Heritage Travelware, a corporation which specializes in this type of product. Our role was unique in that we had the opportunity to participate in all facets of the process- combining and working with ideas truly as a team.
